There is something about working with your hands that naturally slows you down.
The quiet rhythm of shaping wood. The attention required to fit a joint properly. The patience needed to bring a piece into harmony. In many ways, craftsmanship teaches remembrance. It teaches us to value what endures and to appreciate what was built before us.
Memorial Day carries much of that same spirit.
Today, we pause not simply for a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer, but to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. Their sacrifice made possible the freedoms we often experience without thinking — the freedom to build, create, gather, worship, work, and live the lives we love.
At Thomas William Furniture, we often think about legacy.
Furniture, at its best, is not disposable. It remains. It quietly witnesses life unfolding around it for generations — family dinners, conversations, celebrations, grief, laughter, and ordinary days that become meaningful over time.
In a similar way, Memorial Day reminds us that the lives of others continue to shape our own long after they are gone.
Their courage became part of the foundation we stand upon.
There is a humility in recognizing that much of what we enjoy today was secured by sacrifice we did not personally bear. Gratitude feels appropriate for that. So does reflection.
As Tom works in the shop this weekend — surrounded by walnut, cherry, maple, hand tools, and the steady sound of craftsmanship — we are reminded once again that meaningful things are rarely rushed. They are built slowly, intentionally, and often at great cost.
Today we remember those whose sacrifice helped preserve something larger than themselves.
And for that, we are deeply grateful.
Wishing you and your family a meaningful and reflective Memorial Day.
