This past spring, I injured my thumb — a tough blow for a furniture maker. What I thought would be a minor setback turned into ten weeks of recovery. Ten weeks of learning patience, slowing down, and realizing how much I depend on these hands to create.
It wasn’t easy stepping away from the shop. But in that quiet stretch of time, I was reminded that creating isn’t just about tools and wood — it’s about perseverance, gratitude, and trusting that even delays have purpose.
Sometimes the pauses in life sharpen our purpose. This one certainly did for me. They slow us down long enough to notice what we might have overlooked — the small blessings, the beauty in the process, and the strength that comes from patience. My time away from the shop reminded me that creating isn’t just about the finished piece, it’s about the heart behind it — the rhythm of work, the lessons learned, and the quiet gratitude for each new day I get to do this. When we’re willing to pause, God often uses that space to restore, refine, and remind us of why we started in the first place.
Now, back at the bench, I notice things differently — the sound of the planer, the smell of fresh-cut walnut, the feel of smooth joinery coming together. Each piece I make at Thomas William Furniture carries a bit of that renewed appreciation — for healing, for craftsmanship, and for the gift of doing what I love.
I’m deeply grateful for the continued support and encouragement from those who have ordered from Thomas William Furniture. Each piece takes time — carefully built by hand, one at a time — and your patience during the wait means more than I can say. Knowing that people value craftsmanship and trust me to create something lasting for their homes is both humbling and motivating. Thank you for believing in the work, for waiting, and for allowing me to do what I love every single day.
As we move into the fall and holiday season, I’m especially thankful to be back in the workshop, crafting pieces that make homes warm and welcoming. Every table, cabinet, and sideboard is a reflection of the care that goes into handmade work — from start to finish.
