Why We Don't Hide the Dovetail


In a world where so much is hidden, we believe some things deserve to be seen.

At Thomas William Furniture, you'll often find dovetails proudly displayed on the front corners of our drawers. For some furniture makers, a dovetail is something to conceal. For us, it's something to celebrate.

A dovetail joint is one of the strongest methods ever devised for joining two pieces of wood. Long before screws, staples, and mass production, craftsmen relied on dovetails because they worked. Properly cut and fitted, a dovetail can hold for generations.

But our decision to leave them visible isn't simply about strength.

It's about honesty.

When you see a dovetail, you're seeing the furniture tell the truth about how it was made. Nothing is hidden behind veneers, fillers, or shortcuts. The structure becomes part of the story. The joinery is not decoration added later; it is the very thing holding the piece together.

We often say that craftsmanship communicates character. The details a maker chooses to reveal—or conceal—tell you something about their values.

Visible dovetails speak of patience. They speak of precision. They speak of a willingness to spend extra hours on something few people may notice immediately but that will matter decades from now.

The same philosophy extends throughout our work. Mortise-and-tenon joinery. Hand-fitted components. Pegged connections. Solid hardwood construction. We believe the most beautiful furniture is often beautiful because of how it is built, not because of what is added to it afterward.

When a customer runs their hand across a dovetailed drawer, they're touching more than a joint. They're touching a tradition that stretches back centuries. They're seeing evidence of the human hands that shaped the piece.

In many ways, the dovetail has become a symbol of what we hope our furniture represents.

Integrity that doesn't need to be hidden.

Strength that comes from doing things the right way.

And craftsmanship that remains visible for generations.

Because when something is made well, we don't believe it should be hidden.
